George Richard Leipold WX16355 KIA 11 Feb 1942 Singapore, aged 19 years. Service held Kings Park Feb 2018 Memorial Service & plaque laid in memory of George. John Gilmour talks to George’s youngest brother Ken Leipold and Ken’s granddaughters about working as POW in Japan.

Major Green WX3435 was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on the death of Lieutenant Colonel Anketell. In his capacity as the Commanding Officer of 2/4th he was taken by the Japanese and placed into solitary confinement for refusing to sign a no escape declaration and was taken to Thanbyuzayat and was not released until he had signed under duress. In October 1942 he was released and he rejoined the POW work camp at Kendau 4.8 km, Burma. The Japanese HQ Camp was also located at Kendau 4.8 km which was within the Moulmein rubber plantation. He was in ‘A’ Force Burma and Commanding Officer of Green Force No. 3 Battalion. ‘A’ Force was made up of 3,000 POWs and the first group to leave Singapore. Their ships departed Singapore on 14 May 1943.
