General Description

Green enlisted at Midland Junction on 4 Dec 1940.  He was with 88th Light Aid Detachment (L.A.D.) – attached to 2/4th MGB.  He was Warrant Officer II under Commanding Officer Capt Odlum.  Aside from the CO and WO II the LAD consisted of two Staff Sergeants, three Corporals and 11 Privates.
Green suffered deafness to his right ear caused by an explosion on 15 Feb 1942 during the last day of battle for Singapore.
As a POW in Singapore Green left by ship with the first work Party of 3,000 Australian POWs to leave May 1942 with  ‘A’ Force Burma, Green Force No. 3 Battalion.
Green Force No. 3 Battalion was sent to south west Burma where they worked repairing and expanding the air field left behind by the British at Victoria Point.
They then headed to the Burma end of the Railway where they started work on 1 October 1942 at a camp called Kendau 4.8km.
At the end of 1943 when the Burma-Thai Railway was completed the Japanese brought all the POWs from Burma and Thailand into one of about 4-5 large camps or hospitals in Thailand.  Green was sent to Tamarkan Hospital Camp.
He was recovered from Thailand when the war ended.

 

Alfred Green was the son of Robert James Green and Elizabeth Rachael Hauth born Galveston, Tasmania 1900.
His father died 18 Oct 1941.   His mother died 1943 Perth.

Alfred Redvers married in Perth 1929 to Helena ‘Ellen’ Marie Myales.  They had two children.
He was recorded in 1925 Electoral Roll residing with his parents 3 Rawson Street, Subiaco and working as a despatch clerk.
Working as a carpenter, he and Ellen were residing 15 Douglas Avenue when he enlisted.  Between the years of 1931 to ’43 the couple lived around South Perth and as far as Carlisle.

After the war Alfred Green initially pursued business exporting race horses to Thailand.  He died in Bangkok in 20 Sept 1958 aged 58 years.

 

 

Ellen Green died in 1980.
