General Description

 

Wounded by shell fire on afternoon of 15.2.1942 at Cemetery Hill, Buona Vista. Admitted to 2/13th Australian General Hospital on 16.2.1942 with shrapnel wounds to both legs and a gunshot wound to the left elbow. Soldier’s right leg was amputated on 16.2.1942, but due to toxaemia an emergency operation was conducted on 17.2.1942. Funeral service was conducted by Chaplain Lionel T. Marsden from 2/13th Australian General Hospital on 20.2.1942. The soldier’s body was re‐ interred at Kranji War Cemetery on 1.5.1946.

‘Hughie’ as he was known to his parents was their only child.  His father passed away in 1944 and his mother in 1945, in Victoria.

Hugh was residing in Leederville when he enlisted at Claremont in 1940.  Unfortunately, despite extensive search, little else is known of his previous life.
