• Darwin War Trials:  An accused Japanese soldier shows the court how POWs were made to kneel on a piece of wood, left for hours like this they were physically beaten and unable to stand.

• Civilian internees were moved to Sime Road  from Changi Prison in 1944.  Military POWs were sent to Changi Prison, conditions were very crowded.  Women with their children (incl. boys up to 12 years) were interned separately from  men with their own hospital – 3 families lived in 3 bunk beds. Food was minimal and disease rampant.

• Artificial leg belonging to Stephen Gleeson (donated to AWM) constructed for him at Changi by WO NX67447 Arthur Henry Mason PURDON of 2/30th from crashed Japanese plane following his return from Burma-Thailand Railway with ‘H’ Force in April 1944. (by end April 44 Purdon had made 43 artificial legs with many more patients waiting)

• From Australia’s ‘Bulletin’ 10 December 1941- days earlier, Pearl Harbour had been attacked – PM Curtin declared ‘Australia was at War with Japan’ the Beginning of WW2        in the Pacific.  The 2/4th MGB is stationed in Darwin and only weeks away from sailing to Sydney-Fremantle- Singapore
