General Description

Harrie Love enlisted AIF 1 Aug 1940 and later joined 2/4th MGB’s ‘A’ Coy No. 4 Platoon.
Love was with A Coy No. 4 Platoon
Harrie Love was one of about 90 men from 2/4th who missed boarding ‘Aquitania’ before she sailed for Singapore on 16 Jan 1942.  Some of those missing had broken down returning from the hills and most had been locked up in Fremantle gaol and had no means of being released.

The men on Java were taken POWs of Japan about 8 March and imprisoned in one of several POW Camps.
He was selected to work on Burma-Thai Railway with Java Party No. 4, which firstly sailed to Singapore.  Love arrived in Singapore on 12/10/1942. He was evacuated to A.G.H. at Roberts Barracks Changi and did not continue his journey to Burma. Love’s age or trade skills may have influenced this decision.
He worked with X3 Party in 1945.
He was recovered from Singapore at the end of war.

 

Harrie was born 1905 at Bunbury to parents Henry Love and Mary Elizabeth Johnston.   He was the youngest of two sons and three daughters.

His father Henry died in 1931 at Laverton.  His mother died in 1948.

Prior to enlisting Harrie was recorded in 1943 Electoral Role at Burtville, near Kalgoorlie prospecting.

Harrie died 31 Oct 1965 at Kingscote,  South Australia.
