The Soldier's Details

Fullerton enlisted AIF August 1940 and later joined 2/4th MGB’s ‘C’ Company 10 Platoon.   Rod was Platoon Sergeant under Commanding Officers Lt Wilson and Lt Ambrose.

There were several Bunbury boys in 10 Platoon – Bugg, Clarrie Henderson, Norm Jones, Frank McGlinn, Mick Wenn.

Rod Fullerton’s name is included in the Boys from Bunbury.

Fullerton was wounded in action 0900 hours on 11 February 1942 at Reformatory Road, Ulu Padan.  NCO admitted to Field Ambulance with a gunshot wound to his right thigh, another to lower left femur and three gunshot wounds to his left leg, resulting in a broke leg.  Transferred to Alexandra Hospital then to 2/10th Australian General Hospital. The Japanese overran  Alexandra Hospital on 14th August 1942 and he was captured here and became POW of Japanese.  He remained here until 25 February 1942 and then sent to Selerang.  He spent from May 1944 to September 1945  at Changi Gaol.

Changi Gaol May 1944 to September 1945.

Worked with X6 Party, Singapore

Due to extensive injuries received during fighting for Singapore, he remained in Singapore throughout the war.  He was recovered from Changi 4 September 1945.

 

Rod’s parents William John Fullerton and Alice Hornsby married 1912 at Bunbury.  William enlisted with 10th Light Horse in WW1.  He was injured falling from a camel and repatriated home.

 

 

 

Rod attended high school at Bunbury.  He was Secretary of Bunbury Rowing Club and prominent in Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club.

We are unsure when the Fullerton family moved from Bunbury.

 

 

Before the enlistment Rodney Fullerton was a Commonwealth Bank employee at Wiluna.

 

After the war he resumed employment with the bank, confirmed by 1949 Electoral Roll.  He was residing at Subiaco.

In 1949 he married Sadie ‘Miff’ Cormack (nee Hird).    The couple then lived at 22 Ewen Street, Scarborough for most of their lives.  Rodney stated his employment as ‘Agent’ for the years 1954,1958 and 1963.

Miff was a daughter of Tom and Sadie Hird of Cunderdin.

In 1949 Miff’s mother Sadie died at Cunderdin.

 

In 1950 Rod and Miff had twin sons.

Rodney Fullerton died  23 March 1963 aged 54 years.  His ashes were scattered at Karrakatta.  ‘Miff’ Fullerton died in 1990 aged 70 years.
