General Description

Stubbs enlisted 30 Oct 1940 into AIF and later joined 2/4th’s ‘B’ Company, 7 Platoon under Commanding Officer Lt. Penrod Dean.

 

Stubbs played in the 2/4th Cricket team at Northam camp. Please read further
John’s family learnt of his tragic death in Feb 1942.
He was KIA 9 Feb 1942 aged 23 years at Tengah Aerodeome.  His name is included  Epitaph Column 136 at Kranji War Memorial, Singapore.    His body was never recovered from the early days of fighting in Singapore 8-15 February 1942.

 

 

 

 

 

John Stubbs was the youngest of 7 children born to Margaret Ada Bowe and William Stubbs who married in 1901 in Fremantle.  There were 4 girls and 3 boys. The family resided in early days in Leederville prior to moving to  Kondinin where the youngest boys Bill and Bowe were born in nearby Narrogin.

 

In early happy days, sister Eleanor ‘May’ married in 1936.

 

 

The three sons Len (born 1903)  Bill and Bowe all played cricket for the local Kondinnin team.  Bowe also played football for Kondinnin.

 

Brother William, known as ‘Bill’ had enlisted with RAAF and was killed in aircraft accident 25 June 1942 Parkes, NSW.
‘415284 Pilot Officer William Bowe STUBBS was killed on 25 June, 1942, aged 25, while serving in the RAAF at Parkes, NSW.
Pilot Officer Stubbs was the Pilot of a Wackett Trainer CA-6 Aircraft No. A3-106 that crashed as a result of unknown circumstances during a training exercise about 36 km from Forbes (on North Condobolin Road) killing him.
Pilot Officer Stubbs was the son of William and Margaret Ada Stubbs. He was the husband of Kathleen Joyce Stubbs, of South Perth, Western Australia’

 

 

John’s father died in 1949.

 

Bowe’s mother Margaret died in Perth in 1963 aged 88 years.  Both Margaret and his father William were born in Victoria before moving to WA.
