Soekaboemi – Java

Soekabomi is the Malay for “the desired earth”.  Soekabomi was a Dutch hillside station and refuge for the Dutch from the fever and heat of the coastal regions.  This was a Japanese Military centre for what they called the “bad men” of the forces.   They called them so because the men interned there consisted of men of various branches of the armed forces, both Australian and British and one lone American who had tried to carry on a guerilla war against the Japanese in the jungles of Bantam despite the overall command to surrender.  These men were exceedingly fortunate to not be executed for their pains.
