Review WX10708 Matthew Bonser’s military records held at NAA

Matthew was born March 1919 to Alfred Lionel Bonser of Meckering  b. 4 October 1888 and d. 6 November 1954.  Alfred was older brother to George Ernst Bonser father of George Joseph Bonser WX10361 making Matthew and George first cousins.

 

Matthew Bonser embarked 7 Sep 1941 from Fremantle to Middle East.  He was a short time in Middle East before embarking Suez Canal for Australia.  He in unfortunately found his ship had sailed to Java/Batavia.
In March 1942 Bonser was taken POW of Japan, as were all Allied Soldiers.
From Java he was sent with a Work Park from Java firstly to Singapore then  the Burma end of Burma-Thai Railway.
He was recovered from Thailand at the end of war.
Matthew Bonser died 24 Oct 1977 Cunderdin aged 58 years.
