BOANS HONOUR BOARD WW2

WX9004 ALBERT CRYER (known as Albie or Bert)

Cryer enlisted AIF 17 Sept 1940 and later joined ‘D’ Coy No  14 Platoon under Commanding Officer  Lt Tompkins as a Despatch Rider.  He was born England 17 Sep 1919.
At Albert Park where there was an acute shortage of accommodation/bed, Bert slept top n tail with Ron Badock.
He left Singapore with ‘D’ force Thailand S Battalion to work on the Burma-Thai Railway. He died of Typhus at Kanu 1 River Camp on 28 July 1943 aged 32 years.

Bert Cryer arrived Fremantle on ‘Omar’ 2 April 1922 aged 11 years with his mother Martha and sister May.  Albert was one of at least 6 siblings in his family. It is believed one or more siblings also moved to Australia to live including brother Charles.
Unfortunately we do not know when Albie joined Boans or which department he worked in.
Albert’s sweetheart pre war was Joan Guthrie (at that time Joan Chalmers), it is unsure whether they were engaged or not. Joan worked at Foys and was a very good friend of Fred Badock, Ron’s brother. It is assumed that a letter from Albert in 1941was passed on to the Badock’s when Joan and Ray, her husband, had passed on.
Please read Alfie’s letter to Joan

Also read the postcard he sent to his mother.
